So which social media site is right for retail? There are a lot of social media sites out there: Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Each has good things to offer retail businesses, but one outshines them all.
Of all of the social media sites out there, Facebook offers the best for retail businesses. Twitter is a great second string. Facebook offers instant sharing with billions of users and a lot more. While some say it’s more about lifestyle and less about business that could actually be why it works so well for retail. Facebook let’s you share thoughts, pictures, offers and events with those who follow your business page.
It’s a fun, lively, social place. For that reason alone it’s a great way to connect with your customers and prospective customers, create a rapport and let them in on special things that only your Facebook followers can have. Get to know those who you friend or follow. Comment on their pages about what is going on in their lives. Wish them happy birthday or anniversary when it shows up in your reminders. In short, be a friend. People are more likely to want to help a friend than just someone whose business they might be interested in.
Twitter is a close second in the “great for retail” with 500 million users. Twitter is great for keywords, posting pictures and communicating with followers. It is second for one big reason, because of the limitation of characters. You only have 140 characters to get your message out, to convey your offers, to be social. It can be a challenge. The other problem with Twitter can be the fact that if your followers have a lot of people they are following, your tweets can be lost in their feed and they won’t see what you are tweeting.
LinkedIn is a business to business media site. LinkedIn is all about business not lifestyle, and conveying offers here may just be lost to many of the people you want to reach. Not that you should ignore it, as there may be less competition. LinkedIn is best used in conjunction with other social media.
Use a variety of social media, but if you have to go with one, start with Facebook. Your business will thank you.
