Seems these days everyone is on Facebook. Well, close. About 250 million people worldwide use Facebook and it begs to reason that small business can and does benefit from a Facebook presence.
Marketing is, and always has been about getting word of your small business out to people who will be interested and become customers. Word-of-mouth is the strongest marketing; because it comes to people from others they know and trust: their friends.
Setting up a Facebook page for your small business is as easy as setting up a page for yourself. There are, however, some things you should keep in mind.
First and foremost, this isn’t your personal page, so keep it about business. Politics and religion are a huge no-no (even on your personal profile!) Make it fun, make it fresh, but don’t make it controversial! If you are in business, it is important to realize that people watch what you do online and if you are posting about your personal beliefs, it WILL turn off potential customers.
There are a few “rules” to using social media to market your small business. The biggest “rule” is to be social. If you friend people on Facebook just to “spam” their pages with your offers, you won’t be their friend very long. Of course you want to market your business, but be social first. Get to know those who you friend or follow. Comment on their pages on what is going on in their lives. Wish them happy birthday or anniversary when it shows up in your reminders. In short, be a friend. People are more likely to want to help a friend than an annoying spammer.
Don’t be afraid to ask your current friends and family to “like” your Facebook page and spread the word. If they know you and love your products and services, then they are the testimonial kinds of referral you want.
So yes, it does help. Put your business on Facebook. It just makes sense!
