Social media and assisted living communities or nursing homes. Not usually what you would put together! Increasingly, though, social media is being used there because of recent changes in Medicare mean that communication with patients and families and the employees who care for them is more important than ever.
Some larger companies that manage assisted care facilities or nursing homes have taken the plunge and jumped into social media. They do it for the same reasons that most businesses do: branding, marketing, increasing community awareness of their brand, reaching decision-makers and engaging employees. Without social media, doing all of that is much more difficult.
With a very large portion of our society heading into, or already in senior status, competing for their dollars as a place to spend their “golden years” is big business. Since the decision makers for many of the older in our society are social media savvy, what better way to get to them than using social media? Being able to show families how your facility looks, the activities that regularly take place, and showcasing your amazing staff will mean your facility stays full. These days many families live in various areas. Getting them all together to tour a facility to make the decision is sometimes impossible. Letting everyone go online to the facility Facebook page and look things over is easily done. It saves time and gives families peace of mind.
But it’s not just getting to the family decision makers, but to the community itself as well. Posting content on social media about activities and special employees and/or community members draws others in to feel included and engaged. Communicating with employees using the same social channels that you communicate with customers may seem weird, but it works. Think about it, the staff and residents develop relationships so those social connections are important.
In a business that is often found to have a bad reputation, think “don’t put me in a home!”, being able to show everyone, families, residents and the larger community that your facility is a clean, well cared for place where residents have fun and are loved is incredibly important. Social media nursing homes and assisted living communities go together well.
