Social media has become a huge part of marketing today and there are so many platforms. Which platform or platforms you use depends largely on whether you are a business to business (“B2B”) or business to consumer (“B2C”) business.
B2B is a relationship between businesses. It describes transactions between businesses, like manufacturer and a wholesaler, or between a wholesaler and a retailer. B2C is a relationship between business and consumers. All of the transactions that happen between the B2B end up with products or services sold in the B2C relationship. Understandably, B2C makes great use of social media, but there are many situations where the B2B world can and does successfully use social media to market to other businesses.
In the B2B relationship, businesses are trying to find products and services to help their businesses. One social media outlet is a perfect platform for B2B. LinkedIn has been called the “Facebook” of the business world. It is a professional networking site that helps connect business people with others. Service businesses connect with retailers, professional people (such as lawyers, doctors and engineers), even manufacturers and wholesalers. There are training companies that find new clients and employment placement services that find corporate clients with needs. Every business should be on LinkedIn.
Other social media outlets are better suited for B2C relationships. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Google + are heavily used by consumers. These consumers are pulled in by advertising on the sites, as well as by business (“fan”) pages they can “like” to help spread your message. It’s easy to post offerings to customers and for them to spread the word for you through these platforms. A presence on these platforms should be mandatory for retailers, as no presence can almost spell a death knell for your business.
But these are also good platforms for the B2B businesses as well. Why? Because business people are also online here as well. The connections made here may well lead to good business leads.
Social media marketing is not something that you should ignore, no matter if you are a B2B or a B2C business.
