In all of the history and evolution of the world wide web, Google has been unquestionably of importance in the expansion of the internet.
Contrary to a myriad of other claims on instigating it, the internet was born, in a much simplified form, in 1969. Since that time it has grown from a network of college computers to the vast worldwide network we have today.
By the early 1990′s the internet was still not used on a large scale basis. However there was a company on the horizon who would change all of that. Google was “born” in 1996. Its founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin found a better way to make searching the internet easier. Conventional search engines ranked results by counting how many times the search terms appeared on the page.
Page and Brin found a way that analyzed the relationships between websites, a system they called PageRank. It determines the relevance by the number of pages, and the importance of those pages, that linked back to the original site. This system eventually became Google. The name originated from a misspelling of the word “googol”, the number one followed by one hundred zeros. Eventually Google became the top search engine on the internet.
Through the search engine, Google added other services. They implemented technologies that determine user interests and target advertisements that are relevant to them. Google Analytics allows website owners to track where and how people use their website.
Google advertisements can be placed on third-party websites. Google’s AdWords allows advertisers to display their advertisements in the Google network. They are done by either a cost-per-click or cost-per-view scheme. Google AdSense, allows website owners to display these advertisements on their website, and earn money every time ads are clicked.
Google also got involved on the mobile internet. In 2007, Google started to work on a mobile phone, that eventually became Android, a mobile operating system that is used in millions of smart phones worldwide. The first Android phone was released in September 2008, after that, Android phones gave Apple a run for their money in the smart phone market. Now the Google influence in the mobile internet and Android phones are part of the fabric daily life with technology.
